Well Abandonment
Well Abandonment
North Carolina requires that all unused and un-permitted wells are properly abandoned. Improperly abandoned wells can contaminate your ground water and your land and risk tainting the aquifer for your neighbors. Improperly abandoned wells or un-abandoned wells can also be a liability risk for owners since exposed well holes can create dangerous situations for people and animals. County Environmental Health Departments require abandonment log submission for all abandoned wells.
The process of "abandoning" a well includes filing the borehole from bottom to top with bentonite. This process is unique to individual wells and the amount of bentonite required depends on well construction and location.
Well abandonment applies to the following wells:
- Water
- Monitoring
- Commercial
- Test
- Observation
- Geothermal
